Like sticking a band-aid on a broken bone, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau slapped a large band-aid on a broken issue. On October 24th, Trudeau cut Canada immigration levels by 20%. Does this have anything to do with the increase in anti-immigrant rhetoric coming from the megaphone of the United States conservatives and the false tropes of immigrants that have long gone unchecked? Yes. And, Trudeau, you made the wrong move.

 

In this no-holds-barred episode, we will dissect how Trudeau’s decision impacts immigrants and communities of colour. This recent mandate not only perpetuates colonial systems and racism but is not backed by any data.

That’s right. Inflation, high cost of housing and employment concerns are caused by a host of other issues that are not related to immigrants or the immigration system. Wealth inequality, lack of immigrant business investment, massive boomer retirements and private investors profiting from housing are many of the issues Trudeau and the anti-immigrant naysayers ignore. More importantly, the anti-immigrant rhetoric has led to hate crimes, exposing the misleading scapegoating of immigrants.
